Brian’s full name is Brian William Pallister. He has served as the 22nd premier of Manitoba from 2016 to 2021. Moreover, from 2012 to 2021, he served as the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba.

From 2000 to 2008, he even served as the cabinet minister in the provincial government of Gary Filmon and a member of the House of Commons of Canada.

He was born on 6 July 1954 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. His father’s name is Bill Pallister, and his mother’s name is Anne Ethel.

Brian has done Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from Brandon University. Moreover, from 1976 to 1979, he worked as a high school teacher in rural Manitoba.

At that time, he also served as a local union representative. Later on, he became the chartered financial consultant and served as the chair for the Canadian Insurance Agents Advisory Council.

Brian is a professional curler, and he even won the provincial mixed curling championship in 2000, due to which he got qualified for the 2001 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. He finished at the second-last place in the tournament with a 3-8 record.

Provincial politics

Brian began his career in politics at the provincial level by winning the election in Portage la Prairie. He enters the provincial legislature as a backbench supporter of the Filmon government.

Moreover, he was re-elected in the 1995 provincial election as Minister of Government Services. Later on, in January 1997, he stepped down from the cabinet to prepare for his first federal campaign.

In the 1997 federal election, he won the Progressive Conservative nomination for Portage—Lisgar. After this, he officially resigned from his seat in the legislature. However, he lost in that election by 1449 votes.

Later on, he was involved in federal politics for a long time and finally returned to provincial politics in 2012. In July 2012, Brian became the presumptive nominee for the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba.

Moreover, he even won for McFadyen’s seat of Fort Whyte. Later on, in 2016, Brian led his party to a decisive victory over the NDP by claiming 40 seats out of 57 seats in the 2016 Manitoba general election.

Furthermore, Brian also became the first Progressive Conservative premier of the province after the Filmon lost the 1999 election.

Federal Politics

In 1998, Brian campaigned for the leadership of the federal Progressive Conservative Party on a platform designed to win back voters who had left the party for reform.

He finished fourth on the first ballot in the 1998 Progressive Conservative leadership election with 12.5% support behind the other three candidates.

Later on, he even withdrew his name from the contest and declined to endorse other candidates. In July 2000, he wrote a letter to Joe Clark to announce his candidacy in the next federal election for Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance associations in Portage-Lisgar.

However, Joe doesn’t respond to his letter, due to which Brian left the Progressive Conservatives and joined the Alliance in August 2000.

Brian won the new party’s nomination for Portage—Lisgar. In the 2000 general election, he was elected to the House of Commons. In the election, he finished at the distant fourth place.

Liberal Party won a majority government, and he served on the opposition benches. In December 2003, Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties merged, and Brian became a member of the resulting Conservative Party of Canada.

In July 2004, he was appointed the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet as a critic for National Revenue. Later on, in 2006, Brian was re-elected.

The conservatives won a minority government, and he requested the Prime minister not to consider him for a cabinet portfolio as he was thinking of entering the provincial politics again.

Later on, he was appointed parliamentary secretary to the Minister of International Trade and the Minister for International Cooperation. In January 2008, he announced that he would not run in the next federal election.
