He was born on 18 September 1989 in Harrison, Tennessee. His mother, Lynn Wheeler, was a teacher, and his father, Curtis Wheeler, was a construction contractor.

Jacob used to read the youth section of the newsletter, through which he learned that they were looking for new young anglers to finish Junion Bassmaster tournaments.

After reading this, Jacob became excited and started competing regularly in Bassmaster tournaments. Furthermore, by the age of 13, he had already fished in several Junior Bassmaster tournaments with the tub.

During the tournament, Jacob became friends with Bryan “B.J.” Johnson and Brian Waldman. Brian taught him how to use electronics and bass behavior, and Bryan helped him to make good decisions during the tournaments.

By the age of 17, Jacob’s fishing skills improved significantly, and he continuously won tournaments. Moreover, in 2010, at the age of 19, he first time participated in the B.F.L. tournament in Grand Lake St. Mary’s, Ohio.
