Currently, he serves on the boards of Looker Data Sciences and Chubbies Shorts. Previously Marc was on the board of Getable, Rafter, ReadyForce.
Marc is also the chairman of the board of trustees of the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander.
Marc Randolph Early Life
He was born on April 29, 1958, in Chappaqua, New York. Marc is the eldest child of Stephen Bernays Randolph and Muriel Lipchik. Stephen Bernays is a nuclear engineer.
One of his paternal great-granduncles, Sigmund Freud, was a psychoanalysis pioneer, and his other paternal great-uncle Edward Bernays was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda.
During high school and college, Marc spent his summers working for the National Outdoor Leadership School and become one of its youngest instructors.

Marc got his first job in 1989 at Cherry Lane Music Company in New York. He was the in-charge of the company’s small mail-order operation.
Marc taught himself direct mail and marketing techniques when he was trying different ways to sell Cherry Lane’s catalog of sheet music directly to customers.
Marc is interested in using computer software to track customer buying behavior. Later on, he informs his decision to create a user interface at Netflix that doubled as a market research platform.
He developed his theory about direct mail to influence and retain customers doing circulation work and helped in founding the U.S. version of MacUser magazine in 1984.
He also co-founded mail-order firms MicroWarehouse and MacWarehouse with his partner Peter Godfrey.
After one year, Marc made a connection between overnight delivery and improved customer retention. His discovery proved to be very crucial for Netflix’s growth and survival.
In 1998 he worked at software giant Borland International. However, in 1995 he left Borland for a series of short stints at Silicon Valley startups.
In 1996 the software developing company Pure Atria acquired the nine-person software startup. Pure Atria founder Reed Hasting appoint Marc as the vice president of corporate marketing to rapidly grow Pure Atria.
When it is announced that Pure Atria was going to be acquired by Rational Software, both Reed and Marc commuted together between their homes for four months until the deal of merging is finalized. It is the time when the idea for Netflix is born.
Marc wants to replicate the e-commerce model of online bookseller Amazon.com. He knows that digital-versatile discs are tested in various US Markets. He always wants to explore the concept of selling the compact new digital format online.
Marc and Reed cannot find a DVD so they try this idea with a compact disk. They bought a music CD and a greeting card. They stuck that CD in the envelope and mail it to the Reed house.
On the next day, Reed told that CD was delivered in excellent condition. This is how the idea for Netflix is got to the second step.
Furthermore, The initial investors of Netflix are Reed, Marc’s mother, and the Integrity QA founder Steve Kahn. Marc gives a name to the company, create a user interface, and acted as CEO for the first year.
Finally, Netflix launched on April 14, 1998. At that time, he does market research and conducts various surveys to give the best user experience.
On the basis of their research, they are ready to create a successful business model through Netflix. In this model, they introduce a subscription-based service with no due dates or late fees and unlimited access to content.
They allow subscribers to specify the order that which DVDs should be mailed to them. Moreover, at the same time, the previous rental delivery should be returned.

Marc left Netflix in 2002 after taking the company through its initial public offering two years earlier. He gives all the credit to Reed for scaling the company to 93 million subscribers.
