He was born on 2 May 1987, in Plum, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was born to Tim and Sally McAfee. Pat also has a sibling named Jason McAfee.
Pat has attended Plum High School. In school, he played soccer, volleyball, and football. Moreover, he received collegiate interest in all three.
During his senior year, he borrowed $100 from a friend to play poker at an illegal club and then turned that $100 into $1400.
Later on, he used that money to fund a trip to Miami in order to participate in the final day of a national competition highlighting the best field goal-kicking prospects in America. In competition, he made nine consecutive field goals.
When Pat returned home, he was approached by Tony Gibson, West Virginia’s recruiting coordinator, who offered him a scholarship. So after completing school, Pat went to West Virginia University on a scholarship.
