He was born on 31 March 1981 in Hobbs, New Mexico. But later on, his family moved to Midland–Odessa and then to Houston, where he attended the Westfield High School.
When he was 16 years old, his mother purchased him his first guitar. Although Ryan was very fascinated by the music, he didn’t use that guitar much until the next year.
When he hitchhiked back west to Laredo, Texas, to find a job with his father, he took the guitar with him on a trip. His father usually invites their neighbors to the house to drink beer, and one of them teaches Ryan a classical Mariachi song called La Malaguena in segments.

He started his career by self-releasing two albums Wishbone Saloon and Dead Horses, which were later on distributed by Lone Star Music.
Later on, he was signed to Lost Highway Records and released his label’s debut album Mescalito in October 2007. The first single, Southside of Heaven, from the album was released in November 2007.
In June 2009, Ryan and The Dead Horses released their second studio album Roadhouse Sun through Lost Highway Records.
Later on, he performed two songs for the movie Crazy Heart including I Don’t Know and the theme song, The Weary Kind. Moreover, he even played a small role in the film.
In January 2010, he won the award Golden Globe for Best Original Song for the song The Weary Kind. Later on, he even won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Original Song, and the 2010 Grammy award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media.

In 2012, Ryan separated himself from Dead Horses and record label Lost Highway Records and then released his fourth studio album Tomorrowland on his own label Axster Bingham Records.
In 2013, his song For Anyone’s Sake was used in the ending credits of feature Joe. Later on, he wrote the song for the movie, and it was released as a part of the film’s original soundtrack in April 2014.
Furthermore, in the same year, he also wrote the theme song Until I’m One With You for the series The Bridge. In 2014, Ryan appeared in the movie A Country Called Home.
